TSX falls to where it started 2008

TSX falls to where it started 2008Three-month track of the TSX composite index

The TSX composite index has given back nearly all the gains it made earlier this year.

At the close of trading on Friday, the index had fallen nearly 35 points to 13,709.

The drop is not big by TSX standards, but it bumped the index close to 13,704, the final tally on Jan. 2, the first trading day of 2008.

The 2008 high was on June 18, when the index touched 15,073. Last Friday's close was 14,010.

The sub-indexes have tracked the big economic trends. Financial service companies have been big losers, as some banks have been caught in the credit crisis.

Energy companies are up, reflecting higher oil prices.
