Viterra reports strong Q3

Third-quarter profit at Viterra soared, with fertilizer and seed sales posting large gains at the the agri-products and grain company.
Profit for the three months ended July 31 was $166.7 million (71 cents a share), up from $98.5 million (58 cents) a year earlier, Viterra, formerly the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, said Wednesday.
Revenue for the period was $2.22 billion, compared to $1.40 billion.
Revenue at its agri-product business — fertilizer, crop protection, seeds and equipment — surged by more than $420 million to just over $1 billion. Profit before interest and taxes kept pace, nearly doubling to $191 million.
Fertilizer sales were strong, more than doubling to over $521 million. Seed sales more than tripled to over $112 million.
Revenue at Viterra's other main operation, its grain-handling business, rose $276 million to nearly $984 million. Profit before interest and taxes was up $12.7 million to $68.7 million.
It also has smaller feedlot and agri-food processing operations.
Profit for the nine months ended July 31 was $241.5 million ($1.13 a share), compared to $115.7 million ($1.05 ) in 2007. Revenue was $5.06 billion, compared to $2.25 billion.
Viterra stock rose closed up 19 cents at to $10.40 in TSX trading. It has traded between $9.90 and $15.19 in the past year.
