Future of P.E.I. agriculture is organic, producers say
The Commission on the Future of Agriculture should be making organic farming a higher priority, says the P.E.I. Certified Organic Producers Co-operative.
The producers feel their industry was all but ignored in the commission's draft report released last month.
Co-operative president Mark Bernard said his group has fired off a written submission to the commission asking it to ensure organic farming is given its due in the final report.
"To look again at organic agriculture and understand the value of some of this organic agriculture and that we're getting a fairer return for our products," said Bernard.
"It's definitely an option to look at for expanding the agricultural sector as a whole."
The provincial government created the commission earlier this year in response to hard times in the agriculture industry. Its final report is expected later this month.
