Saskatchewan offers special scholarship to honour military service

The Saskatchewan government has created a special scholarship to honour Canadian Forces personnel and those who died in the line of duty.

The province on Monday introduced the Saskatchewan Scholarship of Honour.

It provides $5,000 to all returning military personnel, as well as the sons and daughters of soldiers killed in the line of duty.

Premier Brad Wall says it's a way for the province to say "thank you" to those who serve.

"When we have Armed Forces members coming back [from Afghanistan] and hopefully, obviously, they all come back," said Wall, "there's always a thought of the future both for them and their families.

"And so this scholarship is very much about their future."

The scholarship is available to anyone who actively served in military operations after September 2001.
