Truck plant in Chatham, Ont., faces another 200 job cuts

A truck plant in Chatham, Ont., that is already facing 490 layoffs at the end of this month will lose another 200 jobs.

The Canadian Auto Workers union said the latest layoffs at the International Truck and Engine Corp. plant will take effect on March 1. International Truck is a subsidiary of Navistar International Corp.

Joe McCabe of the CAW said the cuts were announced Monday.

The 490 layoffs were announced in November 2008.

Only 180 workers will remain at the plant when the layoffs are complete, down from more than 1,000.

The vehicle industry as a whole has been hit hard by the economic slump.

Car and truck makers across North America have announced scores of layoffs, down time and plant closures.

Sterling Truck will close its St. Thomas, Ont., plant in March, eliminating about 2,000 jobs.
